Leicestershire & Rutland Airfields in WWII


At the outbreak of War in WWII there was only 2 military airfields in Leicestershire and Rutland. A pre war Bomber Station at Cottesmore and one flying training airfield at Desford.

During wartime another 12 were quickly built.

Before WWII

Leicester Aero Club was formed in 1909

1916 - 31st January - A German Zeppelin drops 6 bombs over Loughborough killing 10 people, injuring 12.
